Workum Summer Intern Program - 2010
Aging and Care Management Department

Jewish Family Service continues to be proud of their association with the Workum program. This past summer Jewish Family Service had again an amazing experience with our intern. We know our older adult clients benefited from this wonderful opportunity.

JFS is open to having 1 or 2 interns working in our Aging and Care Management Department under my supervision. As in the past the interns will work to reduce social isolation, more specifically in the area of socialization and programming for older adults across the department. Research shows that social isolation has been linked to an increase risk for cardiovascular, Alzheimer’s and other diseases as well as mortality in older adults. JFS provides socialization and programming in our Options Cincinnati (Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities) and our Center for Holocaust Survivors and with our Independent Living Assistance programs.

The intern will in the following areas, depending on the student’s personal and academic strengths:

  • Planning and implementing social programs of interest to older adults using a wellness model
  • Client and budget record-keeping, statistical summaries and quarterly reports
  • Program evaluation
  • Assisting in writing and distribution of monthly consumer newsletters
  • Attend training, care conferences and staff meetings as appropriate as well as meet with me weekly to review experiences and provide feedback and further gerontology related information.
  • Interfacing with other Jewish professionals in Cincinnati who work with the elderly, including staff at the JCC, Cedar Village and Jewish Federation

Candidates do not need to speak a language other than English; however, knowledge of Russian, Hebrew or Yiddish is always a plus and may provide the intern with a more in-depth experience. The candidate should have access to a car and be willing to drive clients to appointments

Contact Ann Sutton Burke at 766-3350 or asuttonburke@jfscinti.org with any questions.
