Workum Summer Intern for the JCC



Position: Programming Intern for the Mayerson JCC

As background, the JCC is building a new 140,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility at 8501 Ridge Road. The Grand Opening for this new facility is Labor Day 2008. The new JCC Summer Day Camp will operate on-site during Summer 2008, utilizing both indoor and outdoor spaces.

The new Mayerson JCC will provide programs and services for people of all ages. The building will include:

  • The JCC Early Childhood School.
  • Indoor water park and lap pool.
  • Outdoor pool.
  • Full-service fitness center and private studios.
  • Full-service day spa.
  • 2-court gym.
  • Cushioned indoor track.
  • Multipurpose theater and auditorium with seating for up to 800 people.
  • Teen lounge
  • Day camp.
  • Café.
  • Computer lab.
  • Program rooms.

There is a significant opportunity at the Mayerson JCC for a summer intern interested in working with children's programming since the new JCC Day Camp will begin operating in June, 2008. This will be a comprehensive day camp serving youth from preschool age to teens. A broad range of traditional camping activities, as well as several innovative new programs, will be offered. The programming summer intern will be given the opportunity to develop, plan, implement, and supervise weekly new programs for this exciting new camp.

The intern will work under the supervision of Cathy Weinberger, the JCC Program Director, and will work closely with the JCC Camp Director and other JCC Day Camp supervisory staff.

Overall job responsibilities involve initiating, developing, and supervising innovative and age-appropriate Jewish and Shabbat programs for day campers in kindergarten through seventh grade. Specifically, the summer intern will be responsible for designing one of these special programs each week for campers in grades K - 3 and those in grades 4 - 7. The programs should reinforce Jewish ideals and provide interesting educational and learning experiences for the children.

The summer intern will:

  • Develop, review and maintain budget information for his/her programs.
  • Identify supply needs to support his/her programs.
  • Communicate with camp directors, specialists, and counselors to encourage their enthusiasm and enlist their assistance in implementing the special programs.
  • Evaluate and compile peer and participant assessments of the weekly programs.
  • Participate in team meetings and functions as a member of the JCC Day Camp staff.

The qualified candidate should have some experience working with children; be self-motivated, with good communication and interpersonal skills; demonstrate excellent organizational skills, including the ability to plan projects and activities several weeks in advance; be flexible and able to successfully manage multiple projects at the same time; and should be familiar with Jewish holidays and traditions.
