2010 Workum Summer Intern for the JCC

Position: Marketing Intern for the Mayerson JCC

This provides a brief job description for the position of Marketing Intern for the Mayerson JCC, as part of the 2010 Workum Summer Intern Program.

As background, the Grand Opening of the new Mayerson JCC at 8485 Ridge Road was September 1, 2008. This new 140,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility effectively provides a popular gathering place for the community, as evidenced by membership growth, running about 10% above projection – despite the poor economy. One year after opening, the new J serves over 6000 members and more people continue to join each month. Day Camp at the new facility started in Summer 2008, and a broad range of camp programs were very popular with the families of hundreds of children, ages 18 months to teens, in both 2008 and 2009. Even more day campers are expected in Summer 2010.

The Mayerson JCC provides programs and services for people of all ages. The building includes the JCC Early Childhood School, an indoor waterpark and lap pool, outdoor pool, full-service fitness center and private studios, the full-service J Spa, a 2-court gym, cushioned indoor track, the Amberley Room (with theater and special event seating for up to 800 people), the Exertainment Game Room, member lounges, summer day camp, J Café, computer lab, program rooms, and more.

There are many marketing needs and opportunities at the JCC. During Summer 2010, the Workum Intern will help develop the pre-event marketing and publicity plans for the new Wellness Expo and Twilight Run (5K, 10K) planned for mid-August, 2010. This involves creating and implementing an advertising campaign, promotions, and news releases, as well as developing and negotiating regional partnership marketing efforts, to build awareness and participation for both the Wellness Expo and the Twilight Run. This significant event marks the second birthday of the Mayerson JCC, and is planned to attract new members from across Greater Cincinnati, as well as provide meaningful value to current members. In addition to this major project, the Workum Intern will be responsible for writing and distributing press releases about summer day camp, as well as taking photographs at day camp and other summer programs; assisting with on-line JCC marketing efforts (via e-blasts, the JCC website, Facebook and Twitter); and working with the staff to develop printed materials and manage June/July events.

This is an especially exciting and meaningful summer internship opportunity for a person interested in the fields of marketing, public relations, and/or event management. The intern will work under the supervision of Debra Stonehill, the JCC Director of Marketing and Communications, and will work closely with the JCC Publications Coordinator and Graphic Designer, as well as the JCC Public Relations Coordinator.

Internship placement with Marketing at the JCC in Summer 2010 provides a “once in a lifetime” chance for an intern to be involved in all aspects of marketing. This person will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the effectiveness of a major new event, and will be able to practically apply their marketing and public relations college learning. Another benefit is a summer membership at the JCC, which gives the intern the opportunity to personally utilize all the outstanding facilities.

The qualified candidate should demonstrate superior oral and written communication skills, have excellent computer software skills (especially with Windows Office Suite), have some experience with web development and/or maintenance, be a self-starter who is able to work independently and efficiently, and demonstrate excellent skills in prioritizing and managing multiple tasks. Some prior experience with public relations, marketing, and event management would be helpful.
