Workum
Intern for 2011

& Professionals of the AJA
Job Description:
The Workum Intern will contribute to the workings of a unique research center and
academic institution with an international reputation as the outstanding archival resource
on the history of United States Jewry.
Specific job responsibilities will be determined by the Workum Fellow and the professionals
of the AJA at the onset of the internship. The following is a list of possible projects/areas of
responsibility:
1. Assist in determining subject matter, researching, and writing for the AJA’s online
exhibit (http://www.americanjewisharchives.org/aja/aje/index.html). This may also
include the development of educational and public relations materials relating to
specific topics.
2. Assist the Executive Director and the Director of Programs with projects, research,
and programs relating to special celebrations/topics (i.e. Jewish American Heritage
Month and exhibits relating to Jewish American history).
3. Assist Archivists in any research requests that arise during the summer including
those of the Executive Director, visiting fellows, and AJA grants and programs.
4. Gain experience in the science of archival processing. Specifically, Workum Interns
will be given supervised experience in processing (using archival methods and
guidelines) some of our most recent acquisitions including near-print files, small and
large collections.
5. All projects will allow the Workum Fellow to gain a level of familiarity with the vast
collection of documents, pictures, and objects of the American Jewish Archives.
Please Note: This internship would be most suited for those individuals who would like to
learn more about the inner workings of a nationally acclaimed archives and for those who
like to interact with fellow researchers, students, and archival professionals. Being a wellrounded
writer and having an interest in history, would be beneficial.
