30 hours per week

Supervisors: Rabbi Michael Shulman and Andrea Rapp, Temple Librarian and Archivist

Job Description:
Plum Street Temple is one of the most awe-inspiring and unique places in the city of Cincinnati and has been the main sanctuary of the Isaac M. Wise Temple since 1866. Our congregation is looking for an intern to create a history of Plum Street Temple for tours, students and others who come from all over to visit this special place. The intern will work with Wise Temple to research, compile and create materials that will help preserve the history and stories of that place for our congregational use and for our archives. In order to have a positive and meaningful internship, we believe that the intern should have strong writing and organizational skills and some experience doing research.

The intern will be expected to create by the end of the summer:

  • Resource guide book for tour guides and for reference
  • 3-4 page pamphlet about Plum Street Temple for visitors
  • Framework and content for a possible video or web tour of Plum Street Temple

The guide book and resource manual should contain:

  • History of Plum Street Temple
  • Architectural aspects of the building both inside and outside
  • Interesting and curious stories and facts
  • Information on the memorial plaques, fixtures, and other adornments around the building
  • Photographs
  • Information about the Rockwern Organ
  • Information about the Torah scrolls housed there
  • Lesson plans for teenagers, adults both Jewish and non-Jewish to use for a tour
  • Bibliography

The Intern will conduct research using resources at Wise Temple including:

  • Archival documents
  • Photographs
  • Books and articles
  • Interviews of members of the Temple including:
    • Former tour guides
    • Families who have done consecration, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, confirmation and weddings there
    • Architects and renovators
    • Members of the Plum Street Temple Historic Preservation Fund

The supervisors will:

  • Help intern stay on task
  • Discuss ideas and direction of the project
  • Examine work-in-progress and offer on-going evaluation
  • Be available to the intern for questions and discussions on research and other topics to be determined
