2017 Inclusion Specialist Intern

The Inclusion Specialist Intern will report directly to the Inclusion Director.  This position will require working at camp from June 5th through August 3rd. The Intern will have 7 days off during this time, five days during the camp sessions and two days in between our sessions.

Overall Objective:

To work with the camp Inclusion Director, Unit Heads, and Counselors in the implementation of age-appropriate, intriguing, and exciting camp programs and activities, adapting activities as needed, and provide a safe, nurturing, and fun environment for campers.  This position involves working 1:1 with an assigned camper.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follow camp policies and procedures

  • Participate in staff training sessions and orientation prior to the start of camp season

  • Create an inclusive camp environment

  • Work with Inclusion Director, Unit Head and co-counselors to assist in the development of individualized behavior plans

  • Assist campers as needed (this may involve, but is not limited to, bathroom assistance, implementation of routines, schedules, procedures, meals, etc.)

  • Provide the opportunity for success for all participants by adapting activities, managing behaviors, and providing any additional assistance as needed

  • Assist with instructional swim and recreational swim as directed
  • Keep Inclusion Director, Unit Head, and co-counselors informed of any camper issues

  • Encourage interaction between campers with special needs and other campers in bunk

  • Know each camper in your bunk

  • Know all camp staff
  • Work with Inclusion Director and co-counselors to create and implement goals for assigned camper
  • Never leave campers unattended; never be alone with a camper

  • Share in the implementation of activities; always participate in activities

  • Share responsibility for the care of supplies and cleanliness of camp facilities with other staff
  • Check in daily with the Inclusion Director

  • Take part in phone calls with the family of the camper, if necessary

  • Exhibit a positive attitude and demeanor
  • Remain flexible and available to carry forth with all camp related activities

  • Assist in the evaluation of the camp program and activities at the conclusion of camp

  • Perform other duties as assigned



  1. High School graduate, college experience preferred

  2. Previous camp experience a plus

  3. Previous inclusion background/training/experience a plus

  4. Desire to work and play with children of all needs and abilities

  5. Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and love of fun

  6. Ability to take guidance and supervision

  7. Must be professional and able to maintain confidentiality

  8. Organized, punctual and flexible

  9. Ability to work as a part of a team
